Timber doors, external stairs, sleep-outs and a great deal of original brass that nobody wants replaced with a modern cylinder.
House lockouts
Front doors at the top of the stairs, French doors onto the verandah and the back door off the landing. Opened by pick or bypass so the original hardware stays where it is.
Original locks serviced
Mortice cases, rim locks and brass furniture cleaned, adjusted and rekeyed. On a character house the hardware is part of the house, and it is almost always better made than its replacement would be.
Lost keys and rekeying
Cut to the lock on site, or the barrel rekeyed so the missing key is dead. Old locks can usually be rekeyed without touching the visible furniture at all.
Doors that have dropped
Timber moves and so do the stumps under it. Most sticking doors and missed latches here are alignment, not lock failure, and packing the hinges is a far cheaper fix.
Car lockouts
On the terrace, in a carport or halfway up a driveway that should not be legal. Air wedges and long reach tools, plus replacement keys cut beside the car for most makes.
Discreet security upgrades
Deadbolts to AS 4145 on doors that can take them, keyed alike with the original locks where possible, and hardware chosen to look right on a period door rather than fight it.
A drilled cylinder in a character door is a repair you cannot undo neatly.

What owners of character houses ask
Will you damage my original lock?
That is the thing we are most careful about. Picks and bypass tools first, and if a lock genuinely cannot be opened without damage, you hear that before we begin rather than after.
Can an old mortice lock be rekeyed?
Most can, and usually without disturbing the visible brass at all. A rekeyed original is better hardware than almost anything you could buy to replace it.
My front door sticks badly in summer.
Timber swells and the stumps move. Packing the hinges and adjusting the striker normally fixes it for years, and it costs a fraction of new hardware.
How long until someone arrives?
Ten to twenty minutes around Paddington and Bardon. We give a figure we believe and call back if it changes.
